CLAS Lab Supervisor - Instrument Specialist - Chemistry
About the role
The Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor - Instrumentation Specialist supports the Department of Chemistry at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) located on the Allendale campus. Key responsibilities include maintaining and operating instrumentation, managing instrument scheduling, and supporting faculty, staff, and students in research and teaching.
Responsibilities
- Ensure instrumentation is well-maintained, calibrated, and in working condition.
- Manage instrument scheduling and training of faculty, staff, and students.
- Maintain cryogens and compressed gases for instrumentation.
- Serve on the Chemistry department's Facilities Committee.
- Aid in departmental research efforts and coordinate with faculty and students.
- Oversee daily operations of multiple laboratory spaces, ensuring they are ready for use.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for facility usage, safety, and maintenance.
- Coordinate logistics for off-campus trips and equipment checkout.
- Implement and follow EH&S procedures for hazardous waste management.
- Support faculty, staff, and students on safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Assist with outreach events and community engagement programs.
Requirements
Three or more years of professional experience in instrumental analysis, with experience operating and maintaining specified instruments. Bachelor of Science/Arts in a science-based field required. Strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to lift and move equipment are preferred.

- Ability to lift and move equipment, as well as transport gas cylinders and Dewars using appropriate dollies.
- Experience maintaining NMR and/or MS spectrometers.
Skills
- Preparation of information for reports (Word, Excel, Power Point, File Maker).
- Experience in analytical chemistry method development.
- Experience with diagnosing electrical problems.

Pay
Minimum starting salary of $58,312.00, commensurate with experience.
