Claims Service Representative

Role and Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicate with internal and external customers, including agents, hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices, funeral homes, beneficiaries, and reinsurance companies to request and document information relating to a claim.
  • Provide clerical support in the processing of death and health claims.
  • Answer telephones, respond to specific questions in the initial claims process, distinguish when to transfer calls, and take detailed messages.
  • Thoroughly and efficiently gather customer information to complete new claim requests.
  • Set up and maintain paper and electronic filing systems for records, correspondence, and other material.
  • Open, read, route, and distribute incoming mail and other material.
  • Prepare outgoing correspondence for mailing and distribution.
  • Review work done by others to check for correct spelling and grammar.
  • Prepare IRS Form 712.
  • Enter vouchers as needed to process Statements of Insurance.
  • Prepare and distribute outstanding check letters.
  • Prepare and distribute claims satisfaction survey cards.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • An associate’s degree and one year of customer service-related experience, or two years of customer service-related experience.
  • Basic use of Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to type at least 30 words per minute.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect and compassion in verbal communication.
  • Ability to organize multiple duties and projects to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Good math skills.
  • The ability to function effectively in the workplace as exhibited through one's integrity, courage to act, and communication skills.
  • The ability to work with others effectively as exhibited through one's respect for people and commitment to teamwork.
