Skill Requirements
- Minimum of eight (8) years' experience in civil litigation defense (or insurance defense)
- Handling cases from inception through appeal
- First chair experience in a minimum of 6 (six) jury and three (3) bench trials taken to verdict in a California State Superior Court
Qualifications
- Expertise in municipal law, police litigation, code enforcement, and receiverships
- Experience with contract, tort, public entity, government tort, personal injury, and other areas of civil law
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of judicial and trial procedures and rules of evidence
- Understanding of California Evidence Code and principles of judicial and trial procedures
- Experience with litigation management and strategies in state and federal courts
Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of civil litigation from case inception to verdict
- Initial case assessment, discovery, depositions, motion practice, pre-trial negotiations, courtroom advocacy, and post-trial motions
- Gather and organize documents, evidence, and legal research for cases
- Prepare and draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and other legal documents
- Interview clients and witnesses, and draft summaries of their statements
- Attend court hearings, depositions, and other legal proceedings
- Monitor changes in laws and regulations, and assist in updating clients on potential impacts to ongoing cases
- Regularly update clients on status of cases being handled
- Attend meetings with clients to provide significant updates on cases
