About the Role

Senior Civil Trial Attorney to handle semi-autonomous caseload with potential high exposure. This is a full-time position. The first two weeks will be in person at our Fullerton office. Following that the job may be done remotely, with in-person meetings as required. Candidate must remain local.

Requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years' experience in civil litigation defense (or insurance defense) handling cases from inception through appeal
  • First chair experience in a minimum of 6 (six) jury and three (3) bench trials taken to verdict in a California State Superior Court required

Required Experience and Knowledge

  • Trial practice and preparation
  • Jury selection (voir dire)
  • California Evidence Code
  • Preparing and arguing Motions in Limine before trial
  • Effective selection and retention of trial experts
  • Effective direct and cross examination
  • Principles, practices and procedures of contract, tort, public entity, government tort, personal injury, and other areas of civil law
  • Principles of judicial and trial procedures and rules of evidence
  • Superior and Federal court systems and proceedings and administrative procedures necessary to try cases in State and Federal courts
  • Litigation management and strategies
  • California civil and appellate procedures

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of civil litigation from case inception to verdict, including initial case assessment, discovery, depositions, motion practice, pre-trial negotiations, courtroom advocacy, and post-trial motions to ensure favorable outcomes for clients
  • Gather and organize documents, evidence, and legal research for cases, including preparation for hearings, trials, arbitrations, mediations, and depositions
  • Conduct legal research on relevant laws, regulations, and case precedents; prepare summaries and reports
  • Prepare and draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and other legal documents
  • Interview clients and witnesses, as well as drafting summaries of their statements and maintaining communication records
  • Attend court hearings, depositions, and other legal proceedings
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations, and assist in updating the clients on potential impacts to ongoing cases
  • Regularly update clients on status of cases being handled
  • Attend meetings with clients to provide significant updates on cases
