About the Role

The Civil Superintendent will oversee and manage all civil and structural construction activities on site, ensuring projects are completed within schedule, cost, and quality parameters. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong leadership skills and a proven track record in managing complex engineering projects within the electrical sector.

The Civil Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of all civil construction activities for a new electrical substation supporting a mission-critical data center. The role leads day-to-day field operations, civil subcontractors, sequencing, coordination, and quality while ensuring civil works support key electrical installation, commissioning, and substation energization milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all civil field activities from mobilization through completion and turnover.
  • Manage civil subcontractors, manpower, equipment, logistics, and daily work fronts.
  • Develop and manage short-term/look-ahead schedules aligned with the overall project and energization plan.
  • Coordinate closely with electrical, structural, engineering, QA/QC, HSE, utilities, and commissioning teams.
  • Review IFC drawings, specifications, method statements, ITPs, and work packages prior to construction.
  • Identify constructability issues, RFIs, material constraints, and schedule risks before they impact the work.
  • Monitor subcontractor productivity and develop recovery plans where required.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports covering progress, manpower, equipment, constraints, and significant site activities.

Civil Scope

Provide field leadership and oversight for:

  • Site establishment, survey, clearing, excavation, grading, and earthworks.
  • Dewatering, soil stabilization, and ground improvement as required.
  • Underground utilities, stormwater drainage, manholes, and associated infrastructure.
  • Electrical duct banks, conduits, cable trenches, pits, and vaults.
  • Substation grounding/earthing coordination.
  • Transformer and electrical equipment foundations.
  • Control/GIS building foundations and structural foundations.
  • Reinforcing steel, formwork, embeds, anchor bolts, and concrete placement.
  • Transformer containment/bund systems.
  • Roads, hardstands, crane pads, kerbs, fencing, and final site works.

Substation Coordination

  • Sequence civil works to support transformer, switchgear, cable, and major equipment installation.
  • Coordinate heavy-haul routes, crane access, laydown areas, and equipment delivery requirements.
  • Ensure underground installations are inspected, surveyed, tested, and documented before backfilling.
  • Coordinate civil works with grounding systems, electrical conduits, cable routes, and equipment foundations.
  • Manage phased turnover of completed areas to electrical and commissioning teams.
  • Maintain focus on critical milestones affecting substation energization and data center power availability.

Safety & Quality

  • Provide visible field leadership and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance with project HSE requirements, permits, risk assessments, and approved work methods.
  • Maintain strong controls around excavations, lifting operations, heavy equipment, temporary works, and simultaneous operations.
  • Ensure construction complies with IFC drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and ITPs.
  • Coordinate inspections with QA/QC, engineering, client representatives, and third-party inspectors.
  • Verify reinforcement, embeds, anchor bolts, grounding, elevations, and dimensions prior to concrete placement.
  • Manage civil punch lists and drive deficiencies through closure.
  • Ensure redlines, surveys, test results, and as-built documentation are maintained.

Key Competencies

  • Strong field leadership and subcontractor management.
  • Safety and quality focused.
  • Excellent planning, sequencing, and constructability skills.
  • Strong understanding of civil/electrical interfaces.
  • Schedule-driven with focus on critical energization milestones.
  • Proficient in using project management tools and software.
  • Effective communication with construction, engineering, client, and commissioning teams.
  • Ability to identify problems early and drive timely field solutions.
