About the role

The Geotechnical Project Engineer will execute engineering design within their area of competency while learning and collaborating with their engineering peers, developing into a well-rounded engineer capable of providing solutions to a wide variety of engineering and construction challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage subsurface investigations (scopes, drilling oversight, H&S integration for impacted media), prepare boring logs, and synthesize field/lab data into GDR/GER deliverables with clear assumptions, design parameters, and risks.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses for foundations, embankments, retaining structures, slope stability, and seepage; translate results into drawing/specification packages and construction criteria.
  • Develop designs and specifications for temporary excavation support, dewatering/groundwater control, trench safety, and construction phasing to support remediation and civil works.
  • Support remedial design elements such as soil mixing/ISS, slurry cutoff walls, cap/cover systems, geosynthetics selection and CQA planning, settlement monitoring (inclinometers, piezometers, settlement plates), and risk controls for contaminated soils/groundwater.
  • Prepare and check earthwork, grading, and backfill specifications; define compaction/QA plans; review geotechnical RFIs and submittals; and support contractor means/methods reviews.
  • Take the technical lead in site civil designs; coordinate soil-structure interactions; construction phase testing, and construction permitting.
  • Lead teams of multi-disciplined engineers through project delivery.
  • Work with the engineering team to meet scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements; coordinate sub-consultants and drilling/testing vendors.
  • Complete requests for proposals (RFPs), develop scopes of work, obtain vendor quotes, and evaluate technical merit.
  • Provide field engineering services during construction (CQA/CQC observation, shop drawing reviews, submittals, change evaluations).
  • Diligently implement company business practices, including adherence with the Engineering Design Quality Management Plan (EDQMP) and project quality controls.
  • Execute all work professionally, safely, and ethically according to company values and client contracts.
  • Lead/participate in local professional societies and associations for networking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Geotechnical Engineering; a master’s degree with a geotechnical emphasis is a plus, and approximately five (5) to eight (8) years of engineering experience is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred or ability to achieve PE within 90 days of hire.
  • Active NCEES Record with the ability to gain additional state licenses through reciprocity.
  • Proficient in finite element geotechnical modeling software.
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to convey technical presentations and participate in client meetings.
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently.
  • US Citizen able and willing to obtain security clearance to perform work on DoD sites.
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, OSHA 30-Hour Construction, and CPR/First Aid a plus.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license and can travel.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software.

Skills & Abilities

  • Geotechnical core competencies: Subsurface exploration planning and oversight (SPT, CPT, rock coring) logging per USCS, and development of Geotechnical Data Reports (GDR) and Geotechnical Engineering Reports (GER).
  • Laboratory/field testing familiarity (moisture-density/Proctor, field density, Atterberg limits, grain size, consolidation, triaxial, direct shear, permeability/infiltration).
  • Foundation engineering (shallow/deep), settlement and bearing evaluation, ground improvement concepts.
  • Slope stability and seepage.
  • Earth retention (temporary/permanent SOE, tiebacks/soil nails), trench stability, and temporary work.
  • Remediation-focused geotech (ISS/soil mixing, slurry cutoff walls, cap/cover systems, geosynthetics/CQA, dewatering and groundwater control).

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of geotechnical software: GeoStudio® SLOPE/W for slope stability and basal-heave checks on earthworks and temporary works.
  • GeoStudio® SEEP/W for seepage evaluation of caps/liners and groundwater control.
  • SupportIT® (v2.39) for soldier-pile and anchored-wall design/verification on constrained remediation sites.
  • ProSheet (2017) for sheet-pile/anchored-wall analyses where applicable.
  • GINT for boring logs and subsurface data management.
