About the role

The General Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all field operations for multiple civil construction and utility infrastructure projects simultaneously. This role involves directing and coordinating Superintendents, Foremen, Operators, Laborers, and subcontractors. The position also requires planning manpower, equipment, materials, and production schedules to maximize efficiency while ensuring all work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract documents.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all field operations for multiple civil construction and utility infrastructure projects simultaneously.
  • Direct and coordinate Superintendents, Foremen, Operators, Laborers, and subcontractors.
  • Plan manpower, equipment, materials, and production schedules to maximize efficiency.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract documents.
  • Maintain compliance with Company policies, OSHA standards, project safety requirements, and owner specifications.
  • Conduct routine jobsite visits to monitor production, workmanship, quality control, housekeeping, and schedule performance.
  • Verify field operations comply with project specifications, approved plans, permits, utility requirements, and applicable codes.
  • Cover excavation activities, underground utility installation, grading, concrete work, storm drainage, water and sewer systems, roadwork, erosion and sediment control, and site development operations.
  • Review project schedules and assist field personnel in maintaining critical path activities.
  • Coordinate deliveries of materials, equipment, and subcontractors to maintain uninterrupted workflow.
  • Ensure project documentation, daily reports, production tracking, and field documentation are completed accurately.
  • Prepare and review detailed Daily Reports that clearly and accurately document manpower, equipment, work completed, weather conditions, production, delays, visitors, inspections, and issues affecting project progress.
  • Develop, maintain, and review Two-Week Look-Ahead schedules identifying anticipated work activities, material requirements, manpower needs, equipment requirements, subcontractor coordination, and potential constraints.
  • Maintain consistent communication with Project Managers and the Division Vice President regarding project status, production, schedule performance, manpower forecasting, equipment needs, client concerns, and potential risks.
  • Monitor project productivity and provide recommendations for improving efficiency and reducing costs.
  • Aid in planning and implementation of traffic control, excavation safety, utility shutdowns, environmental compliance, and permit requirements.
  • Perform frequent scheduled jobsite visits to ensure Company standards are consistently maintained.
  • Maintain detailed written reports documenting jobsite observations, safety concerns, quality issues, production status, and photographs.
  • Provide accurate production updates, quantity installed, manpower utilization, equipment usage, schedule impacts, cost concerns, and forecasted resource needs to assist Project Managers with budgeting, invoicing, forecasting, and project execution.
  • Verify installed quantities and percent complete to support project forecasting, change order pricing, owner pay applications, and subcontractor progress payments.
  • Ensure weekly toolbox talks and safety meetings are conducted by field supervision.
  • Perform routine safety inspections and verify corrective actions are completed.
  • Report unresolved safety, quality, or performance concerns to Executive Management when necessary.
  • Mentor and develop Superintendents, Foremen, and future field leaders.
  • Aid in interviewing, hiring recommendations, employee evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions.
  • Foster and cultivate a team culture aligned with the Company's mission, values, and expectations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of verifiable heavy civil, utility, or site construction experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role such as Superintendent, General Foreman, or equivalent construction management position.
  • Extensive experience with underground utilities including water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, force mains, and related infrastructure.
  • Experience managing excavation, grading, paving, concrete, utility installations, and site development projects.
  • Preferred experience with federal, municipal, DOT, or institutional construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of excavation safety, trench protection systems, utility locating, erosion and sediment control, traffic control, and environmental compliance.
  • PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS: OSHA 30, Competent Person – Excavation, First Aid / CPR, USACE/NAVFAC CQM Certification.
  • Thorough understanding of construction means and methods, scheduling, sequencing, and productivity management.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, utility drawings, profiles, grading plans, and construction schedules.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Microsoft Project) preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift 50-100 lbs. regularly and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to walk active construction sites daily, including uneven terrain and excavations.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, crouch, and traverse rough ground for extended periods.
  • Ability to inspect trenches, structures, underground utility installations, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders and access elevated work areas when necessary.
  • Overtime and extended work hours may occasionally be required to meet project schedules.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers.

Salary Range

$75,000 - $90,000/year

Negotiable – depending on experience.

Paid Weekly on Fridays (Mon thru Sun Work Week) w/ paystubs emailed.
