Civil Engineering Intern
About the role
The Civil Engineering Intern supports the planning, design, and delivery of civil engineering projects under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers. This role is intended for recent graduates or early-career engineers pursuing professional licensure and provides hands-on experience with municipal and public works projects.
Responsibilities
- Aid in engineering design, calculations, and analysis for civil projects.
- Prepare and revise construction drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Collect and analyze data, conduct field observations, and visit sites as necessary.
- Support permitting efforts and coordinate with public agencies.
- Develop cost estimates, perform quantity takeoffs, and prepare bid documents.
- Respond to contractor inquiries and assist with construction administration.
- Maintain organized project files and documentation.
- Collaborate with engineers, drafters, and project managers to meet project timelines.
- Adhere to company standards, QA/QC procedures, and safety protocols.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline (required).
- Engineer Intern (EI) certification or ability to obtain EI certification within a defined timeframe.
- Knowledge of basic civil engineering principles and practices.
- Proficiency or willingness to learn AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior internship or related engineering experience.
- Familiarity with municipal or public works projects.
- Experience with state or local permitting processes.
