About the role

The Civil Deputy serves civil process papers, executes court orders, and performs related duties to support the judicial system in Butler County. Responsibilities

  • Serve civil process papers, including summons, subpoenas, writs, and eviction notices, in compliance with Ohio Revised Code and court directives.
  • Execute court-ordered evictions, property seizures, and other civil enforcement actions.
  • Locate and verify addresses of individuals to be served; document service attempts and outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records of all civil process activities, including time, date, and method of service.
  • Testify in court regarding service of process when required.
  • Coordinate with attorneys, court clerks, and law enforcement agencies to ensure timely and accurate service.
  • Operate department vehicles safely and professionally while performing duties.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, attorneys, and court personnel regarding civil process procedures.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Civil Division Commander or Sheriff’s Office leadership.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; some college coursework in criminal justice, paralegal studies, or related field preferred.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check, including criminal history, credit check, and drug screening.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact professionally with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of Ohio civil procedures and legal terminology; prior experience in civil process service or court-related work is a plus.
  • Physical ability to perform duties, including lifting and carrying items (e.g., eviction-related property), walking, and standing for extended periods.
  • Must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed to meet service deadlines.
