About the role
The Ellis County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified individuals to join our team as a Deputy Sheriff. The position requires a TCOLE Certified Peace Officer license but is not mandatory.
Responsibilities
- Enforce laws and prevent crimes.
- Control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations.
- Provide high-level customer service and integrate the community into policing activities.
- Participate in community-based police activities and programs.
- Perform tasks related to courthouse/courtroom security.
- Support law enforcement services with a variety of technical and administrative tasks.
- Investigate, perform community services, administer, and train.
Requirements
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- At least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- No less than an honorable discharge if previously in the military.
- Pass a general educational development (GED) test or hold a high school diploma.
- A favorable driving record with a valid driver license, if not licensed by the State of Texas, obtain a Texas Driver License before employment.
- Have 20/20 vision, either corrected or uncorrected in each eye. Uncorrected vision cannot exceed 20/100 in each eye, unless corrected by the use of corrective lenses, which must be worn on duty and/or during ALL enforcement-related activities or off-duty employment.
- Be free of dichromatic color blindness, night blindness, and any other visual deficiencies or limitations.
- Persons who have had eye surgery performed on either eye must wait one year after the surgery before being eligible for hire.
- Have no hearing loss greater than 30-decibels (correction) in either ear. Uncorrected hearing cannot exceed a 60-decibel loss in either ear.
- Be of good character.
- Have a favorable work and school record.
- Not have a criminal record that would preclude hiring, as determined by TCOLE and Ellis County Sheriff’s Office standards.
Qualifications
- Be free of any felony convictions, probation, deferred sentences, or any other convictions that would preclude a person from being licensed by TCOLE.
- Not be under indictment or pending trial for any felony, Class A or Class B misdemeanor, or non-traffic Class C misdemeanor.
- Not have been prohibited by any state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
- Not have admitted to committing a sex crime, a hate crime, or an aggravated act of violence, even if the act was never discovered or the applicant was never arrested or charged.
- Not have been jailed at any time for failing to pay child support, unless the applicant can prove that he/she was wrongfully jailed.
- Not have been convicted of driving while license suspended in the last 10 years.
- Not have had a suspended license within two years of application.
- Not have been convicted of more than three moving violations and/or chargeable accidents in the preceding two-year period or convicted of no more than five moving violations and/or chargeable accidents in the preceding three-year period.
- Not have been prohibited by any state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle.

Pay
Salary ranges from $73,000.00 annually for Deputy Cadet to $100,521.00 annually for Step 6.
Schedule
Deputy positions require working night, weekends, holidays, emergency call-backs, and shift work.
