Reports to: Special Education Teacher

About the role

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher
  • Assist teacher in maintaining discipline
  • Assist teacher with instructional activities
  • Escort students from room to room
  • Assist with toileting of students when required
  • Work with both special education and regular students
  • Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEP
  • Supervise students during recess and lunch
  • Assist students with classroom assignments
  • Copy materials for instructional purposes
  • Assist teacher in filing material and preparing necessary paperwork
  • Alert teachers to problems that may be observed
  • Participate in PMT (Positive Management Techniques) training as required

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree
  • Two years of college credit OR hold an associate's (or higher) degree OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment (e.g., Parapro Assessment)
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and correspondence
  • Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division with units of money, weight, volume, and distance)
  • Basic computer skills for job-related tasks
  • Ability to follow detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community
  • Awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Ability to push items up to 50 pounds (e.g., children on bikes or wheelchairs, moving furniture)
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (with assistance for heavier items)
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision

Work Environment

  • Works in classrooms, school buildings, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus
  • Noise level typical of school environments with children
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of students in their charge

Pay

$22.12 - $25.18 per hour (per contractual agreement)

Schedule

6.5 hours per day, 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM
