About the Department
The City Attorney's office represents the City of Auburn in day‑to‑day operations and provides legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, and Boards & Commissions. The office consists of three divisions: Civil, Prosecution, and the City Clerk’s office.
Primary Duties
- Appear at prosecution court proceedings, including arraignments, pre‑trial hearings, motions, jury/bench trials, sentencing, review hearings, and contested infraction hearings.
- Review cases for criminal charging and prepare charged cases for in‑court prosecution by drafting documents, contacting witnesses, victims, and opposing counsel.
- Communicate clearly and professionally in writing and speaking to City staff, Police Department, courts, opposing attorneys, and the public.
- Organize case information, maintain uniform case files, ensure proper discovery, interview witnesses, analyze evidence and law, develop trial or motion strategies, conduct legal research, prepare briefs, present oral arguments, and perform appellate work as needed.
- Manage criminal prosecution caseload, coordinating with the Police Department and Courts for effective and efficient case management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
- Valid state driver’s license without impending loss at time of appointment.
- Successful completion of fingerprinting, background check, and the CJIS Security Certification Test.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience litigating criminal misdemeanor and traffic violation cases, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in criminal prosecution, Rule 9 prosecution, or a criminal prosecution internship/externship.
