About the Role

The Director of Arts and Culture works under the direction of the City Chief Operations Officer. The Director will manage and oversee a wide range of programs and activities within the Cultural Services Department, including:

  • The Albuquerque Biological Park (Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Gardens, and Tingley Beach)
  • The Albuquerque Museum, which protects and displays artwork and historical items of the middle Rio Grande valley and hosts world-renowned traveling exhibits
  • A public-private partnership with Explora Science Center, offering interactive displays on science, art, culture, and technology
  • The Anderson/Abruzzo Balloon Museum, featuring exhibitions and programs on the history, science, and art of lighter-than-air flight
  • The Public Library of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, providing reading and research materials, as well as electronic information access
  • The community events division, operating the KIMO Theater and South Broadway Cultural Center for performances and artistic interactions
  • Large and small outdoor, multicultural gatherings throughout the city, including Old Town and rental management of The Yards
  • The Public Art Enhancement Program, managing the 1% for Art Program and the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund
  • Strategic Support, including GOV-TV (the local government access channel) and departmental promotion/marketing

This is an unclassified at-will position.

Responsibilities

The Director is responsible for:

  • Overseeing operations, financial matters, and personnel of the Cultural Services Department
  • Monitoring department performance and demonstrating continuous effort to improve operations
  • Working cooperatively with City Administration and the public to enhance the quality of life in Albuquerque
  • Celebrating Albuquerque's unique history and culture through services, entertainment, programs, and collections
  • Improving literacy, economic vitality, and learning in state-of-the-art facilities to enrich city life and increase tourism

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire
  • Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from the date of hire
