Claremont, NH (population approx. 13,000) is seeking an innovative, proactive community leader to serve as its next City Manager.

About the Community

Located in the Lake Sunapee Region and Upper Connecticut River Valley just across the Connecticut River from Vermont, the Sugar River flows through the middle of this historic community. Claremont offers the amenities of a much larger city while retaining its quintessential New England charm. The city is a short drive from the medical and educational assets of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Dartmouth College, with Concord, the State capital, less than 60 miles away.

Respecting its heritage of textile and machining through adaptive reuse, Claremont is transforming its historic downtown into a thriving residential and commercial center. Served by an Amtrak station with direct service to Washington, DC, and in close proximity to interstates 91 and 89, the city is focused on maintaining momentum for balanced economic development.

About the Role

The City Manager operates under a City Council/City Manager form of government and oversees an operating budget of $20.5 million, with 100 full-time and 65 part-time employees. The City Manager has eleven (11) direct reports and manages five (5) unions covering most employees in clerical, fire, police, DPW, and Teamsters.

The successful candidate will articulate a clear vision for continued economic growth in an evolving residential, commercial, and industrial environment while maintaining the city’s historical presence. Effective and transparent communication with the City Council, municipal employees, and citizens is essential.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in public administration or a related field preferred.
• Seven (7) or more years of municipal government experience in progressively responsible management and administrative capacities, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant management experience.

Pay

Salary range up to $165,000; starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
