Responsibilities

  • Execute opening and closing procedures for the library.
  • Perform circulation desk duties including checking materials in and out, registering patrons, providing library cards, and maintaining the online patron database.
  • Enforce the library's policies concerning the circulation of materials.
  • Perform reserve book functions and assist patrons with self-checkout stations.
  • Answer telephone calls courteously, providing helpful information and routing calls as needed.
  • Receive and process donations, distributing them as required.
  • Receive and ship library materials through courier services and internal delivery channels.
  • Promote efficient and effective library use by assisting patrons in a friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable manner.
  • Set up and operate the cash register, handling payments for fees including lost and damaged items.
  • Process credit/debit transactions and manage money transactions for the Friends of the Library.
  • Close out daily receipts, count cash, and reconcile the money from the cash register.
  • Assist library users in locating and placing holds on local and system materials.
  • Teach patrons how to use the online catalog and self-check machines.
  • Search for materials with the status of claims returned or in transit.
  • Direct the actions of circulation pages when senior staff are not present.
  • File music CDs, DVDs, and Playaways behind the desk upon return.
  • Distribute mail and check in courier/library delivery bags/bins of materials.
  • Empty outside book drops as needed.
  • Assist meeting room users with bookings, open meeting rooms, and update schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to use computers and word processing applications.
  • Ability to learn library automated circulation and catalog systems.
  • Ability to relate to library patrons of all ages in a positive, patient, and effective manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to work varied hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform job duties.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Accountabilities

  • Provide accurate and timely information to patrons.
  • Follow library rules and policies.
  • Deliver courteous, tactful, and positive library service to patrons.
  • Complete work in a timely manner.
  • Stay informed about all departmental matters pertaining to the position.
  • Enforce library policies and procedures.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a public library setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer.

  • Physical activities include sitting, walking, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder height, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity.
  • May occasionally lift files, supplies, furniture, or fixtures.
