China Subject Matter Expert Intern
About the role
As a China Subject Matter Expert (SME) intern on the Digital Advantage team, you will decode the Chinese government’s manipulation of the global information space. You’ll join a team of China SMEs to curate and analyze signal-rich data, extracting actionable insights about Chinese government information operations (IO) campaigns. This internship is fully remote, paid at $25/hour for up to 20 hours per week, and requires a US-based residence.
Responsibilities
- Use internal data tool suites to identify trends and anomalous events.
- Work with data scientists to “label” data and improve the capacity to turn curated, open-source data collection into actionable insights.
- Maintain, augment, and analyze current data feeds, including research of both Mandarin- and English-language content.
- Identify and explore new online data sources in English and Mandarin.
We prioritize candidates with experience in both qualitative and quantitative analysis, though no prior data-science expertise is required. Training in quantitative methods and AI/ML tools is provided.
Requirements
- Professional fluency in Mandarin (comparable to HSK V, TOCFL 5, or DLPT/ILR 3).
- Experience living, working, and/or studying in China or Taiwan.
- Deep knowledge of Chinese culture, modern history, society, and social media landscape.
- Knowledge of international relations and/or the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China.
- Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in office technology: Google Drive, Google Docs, Microsoft Office, Slack, and video-call software.
Nice-to-have Skills
- Strong writing skills, especially crafting concise, data-oriented reports.
- Coding skills and experience with process automation (e.g., Python, SQL).
