Department: Cynthia White Children’s Center (CWCC) – Non-Exempt/Hourly, Per-diem, Academic Year staff.
About the role
The Cynthia White Children’s Center (CWCC) is an on-site, full-day childcare center that provides a safe and nurturing environment while promoting the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of young children and infants. This position involves implementing a curriculum based on developmentally appropriate practices and maintaining caring, cooperative relationships with children, parents, and co-workers.
Schedule
- Position 1: Monday through Friday, 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
- Position 2: Variable hours, as needed.
- Program aligns with The Hotchkiss School academic calendar; occasional Saturdays possible.
Responsibilities
- Care for children ages 6 weeks through 5 years.
- Plan and implement a weekly theme curriculum including stories, educational activities, art projects, music, and songs.
- Observe and monitor children’s play activities; record observations for child assessments.
- Provide individual and group instruction to meet children’s needs.
- Organize and participate in recreational activities such as indoor/outdoor games, reading, painting, and cooking.
- Assist with toileting, diaper changing, bottle-feeding, and preparing/feeding solid foods.
- Organize, clean, and store toys/materials to maintain order in activity areas.
- Support children’s emotional and social development, fostering positive self-concepts.
- Ensure safe play conditions and comply with child care licensing and center procedural guidelines.
- Potential to care for children in other classrooms as assigned.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
- Education and/or work experience in early childhood development preferred.
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience caring for young children.
- Strong ability to work independently while following operational procedures.
- Certification in Medication Administration and First Aid/CPR required (or ability to obtain through Hotchkiss School professional development).
- Growth mindset and willingness to complete additional training to meet State of CT Office of Early Childhood requirements.
- Patience, pleasant demeanor, and positive attitude when working with children, families, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of safety practices and health regulations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team.
Physical Conditions
- Frequent walking, running, standing, sitting (in small chairs), squatting, reaching, talking, and hearing.
- Daily outdoor supervision of children, year-round.
- Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Frequent lifting/moving of 20-25 pounds; occasional lifting/moving of 35-50 pounds (e.g., carrying children).
- Ability to push a stroller, take long walks, and remain patient with frequent interruptions.
