Duties
- Patrol
- Patrol Assigns, trains and supervises patrol personnel, including deputies and dispatchers.
- Takes immediate field command in tactical situations when necessary.
- Responsible for proper utilization of special weapons and field equipment.
- Investigation
- Assigns, trains, supervises and coordinates the activities of investigative personnel.
- Directs field operations in special investigations.
- Supervises special programs and projects dealing with crime prevention, education and training.
- Custody
- Assigns and supervises the activities of corrections personnel to include deputies, Sheriff's Service Technicians and other personnel at various correction and detention facilities.
- Provides job training for newly assigned personnel.
- Coordinates and supervises inmate work programs and projects.
- Coordinates and supervises prisoner movement.
- Administration
- Assigns and supervises subordinate personnel and participates in various specialized and supportive functions including:
- (a) Personnel and Training,
- (b) Bureau of Identification and
- (c) Civil Bureau.
Typical Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of: criminal law, investigation and crime prevention methods; the rules of evidence and laws governing the custody of persons; accepted practices and procedures of good police administration; County ordinances, policies, rules and regulations; and community and social problems.
- Thorough ability to: analyze law enforcement problems and adopt an effective course of action; plan, coordinate and supervise the operation of a unit or section within a major division of the department; communicate effectively orally and in writing; conduct studies and prepare comprehensive reports; establish and maintain effective relations with members of the department, other agencies, the law enforcement community, and the public.
Supplemental Information
Incumbents may be required to work under adverse conditions and be prepared to successfully respond to unexpected and occasionally life threatening events.
Recruitment Process
- Education/Experience Considerable experience in law enforcement which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- The required knowledge, skills and abilities also can be obtained by graduation from high school and four (4) years of law enforcement experience equivalent to Deputy Sheriff, at least two (2) years of the most recent experience must have been as a Deputy Sheriff or Senior Deputy Sheriff in the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid California driver license.
