About the Role
Bismarck Public School is seeking a Child Nutrition Assistant at Sunrise Elementary School for the 2026-2027 school year. This position follows the school calendar and offers either a 5- or 7-hour workday.
Responsibilities
- Attend unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to gather and convey job-related information.
- Maintain cleanliness of utensils, equipment, and food preparation and serving areas to ensure sanitary conditions.
- Prepare food from scratch or using prepared items to meet nutritional and meal requirements.
- Estimate and adjust food preparation amounts and recipes to meet meal requirements and minimize waste.
- Evaluate prepared foods for flavor, appearance, and temperature to ensure acceptance by students and staff.
- Inspect food items for quantity, quality, and specifications to meet preparation requirements and health standards.
- Manage inventory of food, condiments, and supplies to ensure availability for projected menu requirements.
- Monitor sanitation of equipment and food service areas to comply with health standards.
- Ensure safety in kitchen and cafeteria areas to maintain a safe working environment.
- Perform functions of other nutritional services positions as requested to ensure adequate staff coverage.
- Prepare foods and beverages to meet nutritional and health standards, ensuring appealing presentation.
- Report equipment malfunctions to maintain safe working conditions.
- Serve food items to meet nutritional requirements and requests of students and school personnel.
- Stock food, condiments, and supplies to maintain adequate quantities and security.
- Adhere to school policies and procedures.
- Maintain prompt and consistent attendance.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the work unit.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Job-related experience is required.
- Post-offer physical exam and criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance.
- Participate in ongoing training as required.
Skills
- Adhering to safety practices.
- Operating commercial kitchen equipment.
- Using pertinent software applications.
- Basic math skills (fractions, percents, ratios).
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures, food preparation and handling, and sanitation practices.
- Ability to schedule activities and meetings, gather and collate data, and work flexibly with others.
- Ability to operate equipment using standardized methods, set priorities, and work as part of a team.
- Ability to handle interruptions and work with diverse individuals.
Work Environment
- Work under direct supervision following standardized procedures.
- Provide information and advice to others.
- Operate within a defined budget.
- Physical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity.
- Requires 2% sitting, 50% walking, and 48% standing.
- Work under temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury or illness.
Pay
Salary Grade SF (non-exempt).
