About the role

The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) is seeking a Chief Public Defender (Public Defender V) to lead the Sedgwick County Public Defender Office in Wichita, Kansas. This role involves supervising the office that provides representation for indigent adult felony clients, demonstrating a commitment to zealous and dignified advocacy. The Chief Public Defender will partner with the Deputy Public Defender to manage the office and uphold BIDS’ mission of empowering relentless, client-centered representation.

Responsibilities

• Oversee overall management of the Sedgwick County Public Defender Office, including personnel mentorship and supervision.
• Handle hiring, discipline, and general office administration.
• Coordinate periodic in-house trainings, ethical training, and oversight.
• Manage caseloads, case assignments, and ensure high-quality representation for clients.
• Develop office policies in collaboration with BIDS Administration.
• Build training programs with the BIDS Training Division and Administration Office.
• Foster relationships with stakeholders in Wichita.
• Maintain a reduced caseload to effectively administer the office.

Requirements

• Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school.
• Licensed attorney in good standing in Kansas (or willingness to seek admission immediately upon hire).
• Valid driver’s license.
• At least 5 years of criminal defense experience, preferably handling major felonies.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with electronic systems, including e-filing, records management, and case-tracking databases.
• Ability to handle emergency or crisis situations calmly and effectively.
• Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills.
• Commitment to client-centered practice and uncompromising professional ethics.
• Willingness to treat clients, witnesses, employees, and colleagues with dignity and respect.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior or current service as a trial-level public defender.
• Administrative or supervisory experience, including hiring and termination.
• Experience as a Chief or Deputy Defender.
• Experience developing or leading training programs.
• Experience creating and implementing office policies.
• Familiarity with holistic, client-centered public defense practices.
• Commitment to quality criminal defense services for indigent clients.
• Experience developing community connections and resources.
• Experience working with economically and racially diverse populations.

Pay

Compensation for this position (Public Defender V) ranges from $92,500 – $137,812.50, depending on experience or qualifications.
