About The Position And Our Agency
The City of Carpinteria is accepting applications for CHIEF BUILDING INSPECTOR/PLANS EXAMINER. This position is open until filled and offers a salary range of $84,919 - $116,764 annually plus a generous benefits package.
Essential Functions And Basic Duties
- Directs and administers Building Division programs.
- Analyzes and interprets complex building plans and specifications and construction blueprints.
- Interprets and applies pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations.
- Inspects and analyzes standard building construction.
- Responds to emergency and problem situations in an effective manner.
- Prepares accurate and precise technical reports and records.
- Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Maintains physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Operates computer systems and permit, record keeping, word processing and accounting programs.
- Works independently in the absence of supervision.
- Enforces necessary regulations with firmness and tact.
Minimum Qualifications
- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, architecture or related field (highly desirable).
- Five years of increasingly responsible experience in structural engineering, building inspection, code enforcement, plan checking, building permit counter and record maintenance.
- Possession of at least one of the following certificates at time of appointment:
- International Code Council (ICC) Combination Building Inspector (ICC) Plans Examiner Building Official certificate.
- Certified Access Specialist (CASp) by DSA (desirable).
- Safety Assessment Program Coordinator by CALOES (desirable).
- A valid appropriate California driver’s license may be required.
- Maintain a satisfactory driving record.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of project and program management methodologies and organizational management.
- Specialized training in building inspection, code enforcement, plan checking, building permit counter, record maintenance and clerical operations.
