Chemistry Laboratory Technician

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related discipline.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in analyzing and characterizing highway construction materials using advanced laboratory techniques.
• Demonstrated experience with standard chemistry laboratory procedures, including filtration, precise weighing, preparation of solutions, and use of volumetric glassware and automatic pipettes.
• Demonstrated experience operating advanced analytical instruments such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP).
• Experience with asphalt binder chemistry, cement chemistry, aggregate characterization, or related highway materials analysis highly desirable.
• Strong verbal, technical writing, and communication skills
• Strong team-oriented and collaborative abilities

Responsibilities

• Maintain the laboratory in a clean, organized, and safe operating condition.
• Prepare standard analytical solutions and reagents.
• Prepare dispersions of additives such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), polyphosphoric acid, and liquid amine antistrip additives in asphalt binders.
• Prepare samples for spectroscopic and chemical analyses, including crushing, grinding, sieving, and other specimen preparation procedures.
• Operate laboratory instruments.
• Support test execution.
• Document results.
• Assist research staff in maintaining high-quality laboratory operations.
