Chemist Supervisor
About the role
This is a chemist supervisor position within the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), performing duties under the general supervision of the Director of Environmental Chemistries. This position will supervise at least 2.0 direct report FTEs.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the inspection, maintenance, and repairs of equipment and instrumentation to ensure optimal and safe operation - 5%
- Maintains scientific reporting to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures - 10%
- Serves as a subject matter technical expert and unit liaison to stakeholders - 15%
- Develops, performs, and interprets test results or assays from chemical analysis to ensure quality results to the submitter - 25%
- Recruits new employees and conducts employee performance evaluations - 5%
- Develops operating policies and laboratory procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives to ensure quality control - 5%
- Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees - 20%
- Oversees budget and schedules of operational work plans for a specialized technical laboratory area - 10%
Requirements
- Experience on at least one of the following test systems: Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector (FID), Electron Capture Detector (ECD), Mass Spec (MS)
- Knowledge of budget management such as reconciling charges, instrument purchases, service contracts, grant support, tracking expenses, or issuing quotes, etc.
- Experience working in an accredited laboratory employing QA/QC practices
- Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience in an advanced analytical role
- Experience working with external stakeholders such as local, state, or federal agencies as well in internal partners
- Experience with one or more of the following testing: PCB, Pesticide, PBDEs, VOCs, TOC
- Experience as a Hazardous Waste Coordinator or with laboratory waste disposal

Pay
Minimum Salary $78,000/year.
Schedule
Regular work hours for this position are typically 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
