Charge, RN Emergency Department

Location: Fayetteville, North Carolina – Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Emergency Department

About the role

Registered Nurse (RN) plans and implements professional nursing care for patients in accordance with hospital policies. Works as a Charge Nurse with additional duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Completes daily patient assignments
• Rounds with the physicians
• Serves as resource to staff nurses, nursing assistants, monitors techs, and unit secretaries
• Assists with procedures and checks orders
• Responsible for daily QC and equipment checks on unit
• Evaluates daily patient acuity
• Focuses on patient flow and expedites patient throughput
• Responsible for oversight of quality of patient care
• Assists with clinical education of staff members in the absence of Clinical Educator/Preceptor
• Interfaces with Care Coordinator and discharge planning
• Expected to take patient assignment when other staffing options have been exhausted
• Expedites testing, admissions, and discharges
• Implements processes as defined by the Hospital Innovation Project (HIP)
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in nursing required; Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred
• Licensed as RN by the NC Board of Nursing or qualifies to function under another Compact State RN license
• 3–5 years of direct Emergency Department experience
• Experience with the following conditions:
  • Asthma exacerbations
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis
  • Fever
  • Seizures
  • Sickle Cell Crisis
  • Respiratory complaints (RSV, pneumonia)
  • Sepsis
  • Syncope, near syncope
  • Post-op complaints
  • Ear infections
  • Appendicitis
  • Trauma-related injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Procedural sedations
  • Abuse and sexual assaults
  • Strep throat & tonsillitis
  • Abdominal pain
  • Various related adult emergencies

Unit Description

Main Emergency Department is a 64-bed adult Level III trauma unit operating on a track schedule with a 1:3 patient-to-nurse ratio. The care team includes Registered Nurses, a Clinical Educator, Nursing Assistants, Unit Secretary, Resource Nurses, Physicians, Physician’s Assistants, Case Managers, Physical Therapists, Dieticians, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Charge Nurses. New Graduate Nurses are accepted and welcome.

• Position may involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
