About the role
The Chaplain Resident will learn skills needed to be a clinical Chaplain within the Spiritual Care Department at PIH Health.
Responsibilities
- Maintain residency by completing consecutive CPE units and continuing participation in the CPE program.
- Engage in the clinical learning model (action-reflection-new action) of ACPE.
- Apply excellent communication and teamwork skills to maintain successful working relationships with team members and various groups throughout the system.
- Listen effectively, build appropriate rapport, use diplomacy and tact.
- Demonstrate ingenuity, self-reliance, and resourcefulness; take needed action without direct instructions.
- Promote cooperation with other work units, ensure team members are treated fairly, encourage teamwork behaviors.

- Interpersonal skills with demonstrated success building rapport, trust, and credibility with patients/families.
- Personal responsibility and follow-through as demonstrated in prior roles requiring frequent self-direction, effective time management, and appropriate boundary maintenance in both inpatient and outpatient contexts.
- Promote cooperation with other work units, ensure team members are treated fairly, encourage teamwork behaviors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree with at least one year of completed graduate theological education.
- Chaplain Residents must be accepted into the ACPE Certified CPE program by the CPE Certified Educator.
- Preferred: M.Div. or other master’s degree in theology, pastoral care, or equivalent education.
- Completed one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
