This role is a supervised educational position within the spiritual care department, aligned with the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).

Responsibilities

  • Participates in supervised educational activities tailored to the needs of the spiritual care department, facility, and outpatient centers under the direction of the CPE Educator.
  • Provides spiritual care for patients, families, and team members, including prayer, sacraments, and religious, spiritual, or emotional support.
  • Engages in the department’s operations to ensure effective spiritual care delivery, including site coverage, shift work (weekends and holidays), and conducting chapel and memorial services as scheduled.
  • Completes assigned tasks and reports in accordance with system policies and procedures to support departmental operations and develop administrative competence.
  • Develops knowledge and skills in pastoral theology, medical ethics, group process, and human development aligned with healthcare chaplaincy and ACPE CPE outcomes.
  • Interprets and supports Advocate Health’s mission and commitments, promotes patient safety by reporting issues through established channels, and participates in safety initiatives.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, including assessing and interpreting patient data relative to their age-specific needs.
  • Participates in overnight and weekend on-call rotations as per the department schedule, including traveling between care sites as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Studies, Theology, or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred).
  • Minimum of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in professional caregiving or a similar capacity.
  • Strong spiritual care background with working knowledge of theology, spirituality, interpretation of sacred writings, human behavior, and spiritual care skills.
  • Faith group standing as appropriate.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar products.
  • Ability to adapt to change, work with diverse personalities, cultures, and faith traditions.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to participate in overnight on-call rotations per the department schedule.
  • Must be able to stand/walk frequently throughout the workday.
  • Operates all necessary equipment to perform the job.
  • Protective clothing must be worn as required.
