Responsibilities

  • Complete spiritual needs assessments and formulate intervention strategies based on professional best-practice guidelines for addressing spiritual care needs.
  • Actively collaborate with all members of the treatment team to enhance understanding of significant spiritual needs and emotional/spiritual factors contributing to patient well-being.
  • Provide patient, family, and staff support during crises, death, or difficult diagnoses in coordination with the interdisciplinary team, following hospital and professional protocols.
  • Offer spiritually appropriate counseling or guidance in individual and group settings, affirming the dignity and autonomy of each individual’s spiritual or religious orientation.
  • Conduct and/or assist in coordinating individual, communal, and public religious rituals, including prayer, spiritually-informed mindfulness, baptisms, weddings, seasonal worship services, and end-of-life ceremonies.
  • Liaise between patients, families, and community faith leaders to coordinate tradition-specific spiritual care.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated progress toward Board Certification eligibility by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or another nationally recognized certifying body (e.g., NACC, NAJC, CACC).
  • Endorsement and good standing with an APC-recognized faith body.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience working in a Trauma Level I or II hospital.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Demonstrated respect for individuals of all religious/spiritual backgrounds and ability to provide care aligned with the recipient’s orientation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, along with active listening skills.
  • Strong public speaking and leadership abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect empathetically with people of all ages.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This position may require standing for sustained periods, walking long distances, and moving between areas. It may involve exerting up to 10 pounds of force and lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects. Physical requirements include listening, manual dexterity, sitting, speaking, standing, and walking.
