Chaplain - Palliative Care

About the role

The Inpatient Palliative Care Chaplain is responsible for providing spiritual guidance and emotional support to patients, families, and staff within the hospital's palliative care program. Reporting directly to the Palliative Care Medical Director, this chaplain will play a critical role in addressing spiritual, emotional, and psychosocial needs for those dealing with chronic illness, end-of-life care, and distress.

Responsibilities

• Provide spiritual guidance and emotional support to patients, families, and staff within the hospital's palliative care program.
• Collaborate with the palliative care team to integrate spiritual care into patient treatment plans.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to address the holistic needs of patients.
• Work with patients, families, and staff from diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural backgrounds.
• Ensure compliance with ethical and legal standards in providing spiritual care.

Requirements

• Education: Master of Divinity or Master’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies, or a related area from an accredited institution (CHEA accredited).
• Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) required.
• Experience: Minimum of two years of chaplaincy experience, with at least one year in a palliative care or hospital setting preferred. Experience with chronic illness, end-of-life care, or hospice patients is essential.
• Licensure and Certification: Board certification (or eligibility) with the National Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or equivalent certifying body. If ordained, must be in good standing with the ordaining religious body.

Qualifications

• Strong communication, interpersonal, and emotional support skills.
• Familiarity with EPIC electronic medical records and basic computer skills.
