Department: Dept of Spiritual Health • FTE: 1.00 Full Time • Shift: Rotating

About the role

Provide spiritual support to patients, families, and staff. Assist in the orientation, training, and professional development of department staff, community clergy, volunteer chaplains, and visiting Catholic Priest. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and behavioral health groups.

Receive 17% Weekday Nights, 26% Weekend Nights, and 15% Weekend Day shift differentials.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-house, off-site, and on-call spiritual need coverage to patients, families, and hospital staff by responding to codes, death, and other emergencies.
  • Oversee use of chapel for spiritual purposes; act as liaison with local clergy.
  • Provide in-service and community educational needs of individual faiths by fostering an ecumenical approach to hospital ministry.
  • Provide for specific needs of individual faiths by fostering an ecumenical/universal approach to hospital ministry.
  • Provide spiritual support to patients, families, and hospital staff as requested; provide sacraments, worship services, and memorial services.
  • Collaborate with hospital staff employees when working with patients to strengthen the care provided; assist in identifying and solving problems.
  • Assess and plan for Pastoral Care Program consistent with available resources and institution mission; assist in planning, organizing, scheduling, and conducting spiritual programs and services.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops.
  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations they don’t understand or may “not seem right.”
  • Compile and complete documentation of patient care activities using the FICA Spiritual Assessment.

Requirements

  • Pastoral Master’s Degree (specialization: 4 Units Clinical Education Divinity or Equivalent).
  • 1 year of directly related experience.
  • Faith or Community Endorsement.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements exceed those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.

Qualifications

Preferred (nonessential):

  • Bilingual in English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo.
  • 3 years of directly related experience.
  • Mental health facility inpatient experience.
  • Bio-medical Ethics Committee Member experience.
  • APC, NACC, NAJC, CASC, or SCA Board Certification within 36 months of position start.

Working Conditions

  • Significant hazards: Physical risk/injuries due to combative patients.
  • Significant hazards: Chemicals, biohazardous materials requiring PPE.
  • May be required or is required to perform on-call duties.
  • May work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Tuberculosis testing is completed upon hire and additionally as required.
