About the role

The Staff Chaplain provides spiritual care and crisis intervention to patients, families, and staff of all ages throughout Bronson Methodist Hospital. This role involves assessing spiritual needs, assisting individuals in using their faith to cope with illness, trauma, and stress, and responding to crisis situations.

Responsibilities

• Assess spiritual needs and assist patients, families, and staff in using their faith to deal with illness, trauma, and stress.
• Visit newly admitted patients and those with special requests in assigned areas; follow up with patients from previous visits when appropriate.
• Visit critical care waiting areas daily and provide crisis intervention as necessary.
• Respond to all Code Blue and Trauma Alerts; assist families in staying informed about the patient’s condition.
• Document patient and family services in the medical record.
• Participate in Interdisciplinary Team Meetings to facilitate spiritual care for patients and families.
• Provide spiritual care and crisis intervention throughout the hospital; appropriately triage calls and arrange for additional assistance when necessary.
• Participate in offering worship opportunities and meeting ritual and sacramental needs.
• Serve on institutional committees as appointed.
• Assist in coordinating clergy and pastoral visitors from the religious community.
• Support families in coping with death, including assisting with paperwork (e.g., funeral home release).
• Support staff in dealing with emotional loss of a patient.
• Educate patients and families regarding Power of Attorney for Health Care; assist with finding witnesses.
• Complete departmental on-call records by the end of the shift.
• Maintain working relationships with medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments.
• Contribute to spiritual care and pastoral education through publication, teaching, and research.
• Provide pastoral services to accomplish institutional and departmental objectives for continuous quality improvement.
• Function in alignment with the mission and vision of Bronson Healthcare Group and the Common Code of Ethics for Chaplains.

Requirements

• Master of Divinity degree or equivalent strongly preferred from a graduate school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
• Minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from a program accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (strongly preferred).
• ACPE Board Certification preferred upon hire but must be achieved within two years of hire. Certification accepted from the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or the National Association of Jewish Chaplains.
• Must be in good standing and valid in the state of Michigan.
• Demonstrated human relation skills, including verbal and written communication, problem-solving, advocacy, assertiveness, and empathy.
• Ability to work in and cope with a changing environment and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Ability to role model pastoral identity and skills with newer spiritual care team members.
• Proficiency in using Word, Outlook, and Epic for documentation and communication.
• Strong interpersonal skills to work with distressed and anxious patients, families, and employees.
• Analytical ability to assess spiritual needs and find appropriate solutions.
• Empathy for the problems experienced by patients, families, and employees; commitment to helping the distressed.
• Ability to collaborate with other disciplines to meet the spiritual needs of patients and families.

Physical Demands

• Work may include frequent standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (20 pounds or less), and assisting with heavier tasks such as lifting and moving patients.
• Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
• Work involves operation of and attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time.
• Work produces levels of mental/visual fatigue typical of jobs with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines.
