Responsibilities

The overall responsibility of the Chair is to lead the Department to a position of academic and professional eminence, while furthering the goals and missions of the SOM including and not limited to the following:

  • Establish a vision for the department and effectively communicate how it contributes to the success of individual faculty members, the SOM, the institution, and professional discipline.
  • Work collaboratively with institutional leadership and colleagues to lead an academic Department that will continue to support the SOM's strategic goal of being nationally recognized for education, research and clinical care.
  • Recruit, retain and develop talented faculty to fulfill the needs and mission of the SOM.
  • Collaborate with the SOM and its affiliate clinical sites to achieve the SOM strategic goal of reputation growth.
  • Provide leadership to ensure that departmental faculty members develop their academic careers and are engaged, active participants in service to the SOM's mission with a clear understanding of their academic roles and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate innovation, scholarship, a record of funded basic, translational or clinical research, ability to balance duties in education, research, administration, and clinical care, and significant experience in the practice and management of clinical medicine.
  • Lead the Department toward developing a strong translational research program that addresses the bench-to-bedside paradigm through partnerships and collaborations.
  • Accountable for achieving Departmental excellence in the missions of education, training, research, and clinical care, with encouragement and emphasis of interdisciplinary activities where appropriate.
  • Support the developmental and professional needs of the M.D. Degree Program, NYMC-sponsored resident and fellowship training programs, and NYMC-sponsored graduate student training programs.
  • Ensure an academically robust and fully accredited Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program supported by a dedicated, professional teaching faculty that is welcoming to learners, and is overseen by knowledgeable program directors that represent and uphold the SOM educational mission, working collaboratively with the SOM designated institutional official and the Dean of GME as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital leaders and the Dean's Senior Management team to meet the SOM's M.D. Degree Program needs for medical student clinical experiences, ensuring an optimum learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of the SOM and Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to ensure graduate student training programs are supported by clinical sites, as appropriate, and faculty that are qualified in teaching, mentoring and supervising students as appropriate to the discipline and expertise.
  • Remain clinically active in order to serve as a role model to learners, while shaping the future of clinical care, research, and teaching in the Department.
  • Promote the mission of the Department through effective management of departmental clinical operations by ensuring the quality, availability, and appropriateness of clinical services provided by Department's faculty in concert with the missions and goals of NYMC.
  • Encourage and support diversity among the Department's constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance and acceptance.
  • Assure equitable salary and academic work conditions for Department faculty and facilitate their continuing professional development.
  • Provide compensation information for full-time faculty members of the Department to complete national benchmarking surveys for the Association of Academic Medical Centers, as requested.
  • Manage Department staff, finances and resources effectively and efficiently, and in accordance with the SOM budget and university policy and procedures.
  • Ensure that the Department remains current with all payments to NYMC for services and benefits provided by the SOM, including CME fees, Faculty Deans Dues, charges for the support of residents conducting research, fees for biostatistical support services for research, etc., as applicable.
  • Understand the external environments of healthcare, education and research and develop relevant metrics to evaluate the outcomes of Department activities.
  • Recognize and manage any potential faculty member conflicts of time and commitment while engaged at SOM affiliate clinical sites, including Westchester Medical Center and WMCHealth system sites.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Dean of the SOM.
  • Contribute as an active member of the Dean's Department Chairs Committee.
  • Provide expertise and support to the College and SOM's strategic planning process.
  • Contribute to institutional efforts to support successful maintenance of accreditation and reviews by outside agencies.

This position description may be reviewed and modified from time to time, as necessary. Minimum Salary USD $28,454.40/Yr. Maximum Salary USD $35,568.00/Yr.
