cGMP HVAC Mechanic

Key Roles/Responsibilities

  • The work hours for this position will be 6:30am to 3:00pm.
  • Installs, services, rebuilds, and repairs commercial and industrial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems in accordance with applicable codes and safety requirements.
  • Performs periodic inspections to identify, diagnose, and correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to reduce equipment failures involving refrigeration compressors, evaporators, condensers, pneumatic and electrical controls, pumps, fans, and heating-water systems.
  • Accurately charges air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, performs leak testing, evaluates and adjusts refrigerant metering devices to ensure proper system operation.
  • Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork as needed.
  • Performs repairs and component replacement on heating-water system including, circulating pumps, motors, valves, and other associated mechanical equipment.
  • May be required to service and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS), including monitoring system operation, adjusting setpoints and component replacement as needed.
  • May be required to install, service, and maintain cleanroom HVAC systems, including temperature, humidity, pressure, filtration, and airflow controls, in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) requirements, approved procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Operates and repairs cGMP air handlers, roof mounted exhaust fans, reheat coils, cabinet heating systems, and heating hot water distribution systems.
  • Replaces belts, sheaves, motors and bearings as required on air handling equipment and exhaust fans.
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of biosafety cabinets, CO₂ incubators, clean-in-place (CIP) and steam-in-place (SIP) systems, fan coil units, chilled-water and heating-water control valves, pneumatic controls, domestic hot-water systems, and equipment connected to emergency power systems.
  • Will train on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep training current as required.
  • Assists other trades personnel with maintenance and repair work when additional support is needed to safely and efficiently complete the task.

Basic Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of HVAC-related experience.
  • Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting chilled-water distribution loops.
  • Experience with heating-water system repair and replacement.
  • Knowledge of high-tonnage air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, including various types of refrigeration compressors; pneumatic, electronic, mechanical, and building automation controls; including piping system practices associated with HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Experience with process glycol refrigeration systems, including multi-stage refrigeration equipment, evaporators, circulation pumps, condenser fans, and wet and dry-coil systems.
  • Experience working with a Building Automation System (BAS), such as Schneider Electric Building Automation System 3.2, automation servers, and all peripherals associated with the operating system.
  • Ability to read blueprint and schematics relating to air conditioning and refrigeration systems; apply standard practices and techniques; perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Current EPA Section 608 Universal Certification for refrigerant handling, recovery, and system service.
  • Must be able to follow routine safety practices in the HVAC trade.
  • Must be able to work in an environment involving bending, stooping, confined spaces, potential exposure to particulates, vapors, and noisy environments.
  • Must be available for emergency on call as needed.
  • This position is considered safety sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Physical Qualifications

  • The ability to maintain balance at all times, walk, kneel, hear (corrective appliance allowed), use of both hands, arms and legs, carry up to 50lb, lift >50lb, reach above shoulders, climb ladders, push/pull, repeated bending and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to obtain confined space certification.
  • Visual acuity to include depth perception, color distinction, and vision correctable to 20/40.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to enter a Laboratory or Encounter a Hazardous Area.
  • Ability to kneel.
  • Ability to operate and/or service equipment that contacts or transports compressed or liquid gas.
  • Pacemaker prohibited.
  • Repeated bending.
  • Exposure to temperatures below 32 degrees indoors for small amounts of time.
  • Exposure to temperatures above 90 degrees indoors for small amounts of time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a formal HVAC apprenticeship program, or an equivalent combination of technical training and at least five years of relevant experience, is preferred. A current Maryland HVAC Journeyman License may be accepted as evidence of equivalent qualification.
  • Familiarity with cGMP policies and procedures pertaining to Good Manufacturing practices.
  • Familiarity with policies and procedures pertaining to Good Manufacturing practices.
  • Experience with pharmaceutical manufacturing environments and GMP control.
  • GMP experience with clean and dirty utilities.
  • Experience with steam boiler operation, controls, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Experience with residential and commercial plumbing systems, maintenance, and repair.
  • Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of large commercial or industrial chiller plants.

  • This position is subject to working in or have the potential to exposure to high noise levels for extended periods of time required medical clearance.
