We are looking for an experienced Chief Financial Officer to provide strategic financial leadership for a non-profit organization in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This long-term contract opportunity is ideal for a hands-on finance executive who can strengthen board-level reporting, deliver clear financial insights, and support informed decision-making across the organization. The role requires a collaborative, detail-oriented individual who listens carefully, works effectively with internal stakeholders, and brings confidence in nonprofit financial management.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and present high-level financial reports that support executive leadership, the finance committee, and the board in understanding organizational performance.
  • Develop meaningful variance analysis and explain financial trends, risks, and unexpected results through clear written and verbal commentary.
  • Build and refine internal reporting tools using Excel and trial balance data to provide timely, accurate insight for decision-making.
  • Partner with staff to improve the reliability and automation of financial reporting within Blackbaud, including budget-related reporting where appropriate.
  • Review and reconcile key balance sheet accounts, including net assets and accounts receivable, to maintain financial accuracy and transparency.
  • Support the completion and finalization of financial policies by providing guidance, review, and recommendations as needed.
  • Contribute financial expertise in board and finance committee meetings by answering questions, providing context, and helping stakeholders interpret results.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience serving in a senior finance leadership role such as CFO, fractional CFO, or equivalent.
  • Prior nonprofit accounting or financial leadership experience with a strong understanding of fund-based reporting and governance expectations.
  • Strong background in financial analysis, including the ability to investigate variances and identify underlying business drivers.
  • Proven ability to create and deliver financial presentations and narratives for boards, committees, or executive audiences.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for reporting, analysis, and financial modeling.
  • Experience working with Blackbaud or Financial Edge, with the ability to support effective reporting processes.
  • Solid knowledge of account reconciliations, financial reporting, and balance sheet review.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach and the confidence to work independently.
