Responsibilities
- Perform patient care activities, individualizing perioperative care and assisting with positioning to meet the needs of the patient and surgeon.
- Protect nerve and bony prominences, maintain body alignment to ensure vascular flow and unencumbered respiratory ventilation, and maintain patient privacy.
- Ensure physical preparation of the surgical suite, including cleaning, stocking, and replacing supplies.
- Open sterile supplies onto the sterile field using aseptic techniques; ensure the integrity of the sterile field and initiate corrective measures as needed.
- Comply with Surgery Center protocols and manufacturer guidelines for use, processing, and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
- Check equipment for safe working order and effective cleaning prior to use; remove defective instruments and document issues.
- Set up sterile tables with instruments, sutures, blades, electrosurgical equipment, suction, prostheses, and solutions according to Center standards.
- Scrub, gown, and glove according to established Center policy.
- Identify all specimens and follow special instructions from the surgeon; prepare surgical incisions and apply post-op dressings per surgeon preference.
- Assist with patient transport and keep surgeon’s preference cards current by reporting needed changes.
- Prepare instruments for decontamination and sterilization; participate in room turnover as an OR team member.
- Apply basic knowledge of solutions and medications used during surgical procedures in accordance with OR standards.
- Maintain supply of sponges, fluids, sutures, and other supplies during procedures.
- Hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon, hold retractors, cut sutures, and perform other tasks as directed.
- Use dexterity and economy of motion in passing surgical instruments.
- Function as a team member during stress and crisis situations; utilize cost containment principles for supplies.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Formal training as an OR Technician.
- Certification as a surgical technologist (required).
- CGRN certification (preferred).
- Must obtain ACLS certification within 3 months of employment.
