About the Role

Facilitates operative or other invasive procedures by preparing and providing required sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.

Responsibilities

• Functions as the scrub person during operative and invasive procedures by assembling supplies and equipment.
• Prepares and organizes sterile supplies and instruments; performs surgical counts with the circulating RN according to policy.
• Maintains an organized sterile field and ensures sterility by taking corrective action as needed.
• Assists with placement of sterile drapes and provides instruments/supplies to the surgical team while maintaining aseptic technique.
• Retrieves, collects, and labels specimens appropriately and correctly.
• Reports implanted devices, catheters, drains, and packing to the circulator.
• Provides complete case preparation with knowledge of special instruments, supplies, and equipment needs for patient populations.
• Demonstrates knowledge of patients’ rights, responsibilities, and advance directives.
• Assists in CPR as needed.
• Assists with pre- and post-procedure cleaning of the operative room and instruments.
• Practices and delivers care in accordance with BSMH policy.
• Participates in ongoing education, competency verification, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Utilizes resources cost-consciously and contributes to financial accountability.
• Participates in all patient safety care measures.
• Available for "on call" as scheduled within department time frames.
• Participates in the orientation of new staff and students as assigned.
• Prepares and performs surgical skin prep, clipping, and urinary catheter insertion as required.
• Demonstrates flexibility regarding unit/area staffing and scheduling needs.
• Maintains personal grooming and attire consistent with BSMH policy.

Requirements

• Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) or Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (required).
• BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care).
• Associates Degree, Vocational Certification, or Military Certificate in Surgical Technology (required).
• One year of perioperative, operating room, or related military surgical technology experience (preferred).

Schedule

Full-time, scheduled for 40 weekly hours (5 days/week). General shift times: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Some Saturday availability required.
