About the role

As a Certified Surgical First Assistant at Monument Health, you will be an essential team member providing compassionate, patient-focused care under the immediate supervision of a surgeon. You will actively assist in completing operations safely and effectively by anticipating the needs of the surgical team in accordance with hospital policy and regulations. Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate competence and knowledge in executing aseptic technique and assisting with surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrate competency in positioning, draping, and applying surgical dressings, splints, and casts.
  • Establish, maintain, and monitor the surgical environment to reduce infection risk through proper sterilization, decontamination, and disinfection procedures.
  • Assist the surgeon intraoperatively by maintaining visualization of the operative site through retractors, sponges, suctioning, irrigation, suture manipulation, and proper body mechanics.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and competency in assisting with surgical procedures, including anatomy, physiology, positioning, prepping, draping, and patient transfer.
  • Handle unanticipated events and crisis situations professionally, alerting appropriate individuals as needed.
  • Ensure all sterile instruments and supplies meet appropriate standards.
  • Manage room and supplies to minimize waste, reporting concerns to Team Leaders and providing written recommendations for changes.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Surgical First Assistant from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 60 days of hire or transfer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of Surgical Technologist experience.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 scheduled weekly hours. Requires the ability to work assigned schedules and hours as determined by the department.

Pay

Starting pay rate range: $34.69 - $41.80 per hour, determined by the knowledge, skills, and experience of the applicant.

Physical Requirements

Heavy work: exerting up to 25 pounds of force constantly (67-100% of the time), up to 50 pounds frequently (34-66% of the time), and up to 100 pounds occasionally (up to 33% of the time). Possible exposure to radiation and frequent exposure to contaminated needles and infectious body substances.
