Job Summary and Qualifications
The Surgical Certified First Assistant (CFA) is a specially trained individual who assists the surgeon in completing operations safely and expeditiously. They help with exposure, maintaining hemostasis, and other technical functions. They are experienced in aseptic techniques, setting up required equipment, and performing various surgical tasks.
Position Requirements
- Licensure/Certification/Registration: Registration as a Surgical Assistant by Colorado Division of Registration (DORA) and current certification as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) or American Board of Surgical Assistants. Commensurate experience may take the place of CSFA, NBSTSA, NSAA or ABSA certifications.
- Current BLS Certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Education: Graduation from a school of surgical technology approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and completion of a First Assistant Program accredited through ARC/STSA, a collaborative effort of ASA, ACS, and SASA by CAAHEP.
- Experience: Minimum two years of experience as a surgery technician.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Advanced knowledge in the scrub role and demonstrated proficiency in multiple service lines/specialties.
- Expert specialized skills in at least one service line.
- Demonstrates leadership qualities.
- Displays appropriate judgement and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates good organizational skills.
- Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers.
- Able to handle medications, syringes, needles, etc. and is accountable to the registered nurse for oversight of this practice.
- Demonstrated competence with patient care information systems including Meditech, and Microsoft Office programs.
- Able to educate staff using adult learning principles.
