Certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor
About the role
The Certified SUD Counselor Division at Special Service for Groups, Inc. (HOPICS) provides individual and group services to Drug Medi-Cal Program clients. This role requires the provision of evidence-based practice theory counseling, case management, treatment planning, and relapse prevention services.
Responsibilities
- Provide group and individual SUD counseling services utilizing evidence-based practice theory.
- Provide case management/care coordination services.
- Facilitate collaboration with SUD clients to develop and complete necessary treatment planning documents and relapse prevention plans.
- Document progress notes daily and input client data into the designated EHR/PCNX system.
- Administer drug tests/UA/Toxicology to Drug Medi-Cal clients while following protocols and procedures.
- Maintain 70% productivity as outlined by SSG and document in accordance with established standards of care.
- Maintain boundaries, adhere to SSG’s Code of Ethics and HOPICS’ Core Values, and represent the agency professionally.
- Participate in weekly supervision and attend required meetings, training, and collaborations.
- Work with people experiencing homelessness, adults with co-occurring substance use and mental/physical/developmental disabilities, and clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Communicate effectively in Spanish to provide treatment to Spanish-speaking clients and motivate/communicate with individuals receiving SUD Counseling/Treatment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Verification of Employment Eligibility and Background Check.
- 5 years of SUD Counselor work experience.
- Knowledge of DSM-V Substance Abuse Criteria and 12-step programs.
- Ability to manage group settings and organize multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Certified Substance Use Disorder Counselor (CAADE, CCAPP, CADTP).
- Annual TB test clearance.
- Drivers license with valid and up-to-date car insurance.
- Reliable transportation.
- A minimum of three (3) years of being drug and alcohol free if in recovery.
- Knowledge and skills in providing substance use disorder treatment in both English and Spanish.

- Knowledge: Of Addictions, and effects/symptoms of drug/alcohol choices.
- Skills: Level of competency or proficiency needed for task performance.
- Abilities: Trait or capability necessary to perform the job.
- Proficient in providing substance use disorder treatment in both English and Spanish (a plus).
Supervisory Responsibilities
This person has no supervising duties.
Environmental Conditions (Working Conditions)
This position will require extensive interaction with homeless individuals, individuals with severe mental and physical disabilities, the possibilities of individuals with infectious diseases, and other possible dangers associated with working in areas of high crime. You may be exposed to aggressive hostile clients. Incumbent must be ready to deal with traumas which may trigger personal trauma, must work in conjunction with other collaborative staff members, communicate with several sources including courts, Department of Children and Family Services, Law Enforcement, and other community agencies.
Physical Requirements
- Spend time sitting, standing, typing, thinking, writing, walking, driving, listening, and speaking.
- Must have the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

- Perform effectively under unpredictable situations, crisis, constant distractions, interruptions, uncontrollable changes in priorities/work schedules.
- Be able to process information, think and conceptualize.
- Deal with personal trauma that may be triggered.

Pay
$29.00 - $33.00 per hour
