About the Role

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital prepares prescribed solutions and administers anesthetic following specified methods and procedures. The CRNA informs the physician of the patient's condition during anesthesia, performs pre- and post-anesthesia patient visits, and documents anesthesia notes on patient records.

This PRN position involves providing anesthesia care to a wide variety of patients, from pre-term neonates to geriatrics, across multiple pediatric surgical specialties, including cardiovascular, trauma, oncology, transplant, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, ophthalmology, general surgery, dental, and plastics. Coverage includes eight operating suites, two cardiac cath labs, endoscopy suites, minor procedure rooms, and non-operating room sites such as CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, and a heme-oncology procedure room.

Responsibilities

• Administer appropriate anesthetics in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist, adhering to standards of practice.
• Operate anesthesia machines and related equipment, assist in patient transport, and maintain accurate patient records.
• Participate in the teaching activities of the department and continuing education programs.
• Demonstrate professionalism and provide resuscitative care as indicated.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, residents, anesthesia personnel, and nursing staff.
• Practice under the clinical supervision of an anesthesiologist and administrative supervision of the CRNA manager.

Requirements

• Graduate of a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs approved program of anesthesia.
• Certified or recertified by the National Board on Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
• Insurable by the medical malpractice insurer of MUSC for required limits.
• For those hired after March 1, 2019, a master’s degree or higher with a concentration in Nurse Anesthesia is required.
• Current competency in clinical privileges extended and proficiency in operating anesthesia equipment.
• Knowledge of universal precautions, safety protocols in a healthcare facility, and anesthesia practices.

Qualifications

• Recognized as an APRN (or eligible) with a current or obtainable license to practice in South Carolina.
• Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, or walking continuously.
• Ability to climb stairs, work in confined/cramped spaces, and from kneeling positions infrequently.
• Ability to bend at the waist continuously, twist frequently, and squat frequently.
• Ability to perform gross and fine motor activities with fingers and hands continuously, including pinching, firm grasping, and fine manipulation.
• Ability to reach overhead, in all directions, and perform repetitive motions continuously.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted infrequently, and exert up to 50 lbs. of force frequently (e.g., transferring patients, pushing stretchers).
• Ability to maintain 20/40 vision (corrected), depth perception, color discrimination, and peripheral vision continuously.
• Ability to maintain hearing acuity (with correction) and tactile sensory functions continuously.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, and in a latex-safe environment frequently.
• Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations continuously.
• (Selected positions) Ability to maintain olfactory sensory function continuously.
• (Selected positions) Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use initially and as required continuously.

Pay

Hourly pay rate, classified under Pay Grade Health-37.

Schedule

PRN position with 8 scheduled weekly hours (flexible, as needed).
