About the role
The City of Hampton seeks experienced and driven law enforcement professionals to join the Hampton Police Division as a Certified Detective. This role involves conducting in-depth criminal investigations, gathering and analyzing evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.
Responsibilities
- Conducts in-depth criminal investigations
- Gathers and analyzes evidence
- Interviews witnesses and suspects
- Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies
- Works with other police personnel in conducting searches, surveillance, and arrests
- Enforces laws and ordinances of the City of Hampton and the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints
- Provides assistance to other police personnel upon request
- Completes detailed follow-up investigations
- Brings cases to a logical and correct conclusion
- Aids in the prosecution of cases
- Furnishes case reports to the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office
- Communicates with the public about laws and ordinances
- Ensures case reports are complete, accurate, and compliant with police division requirements
- Trains police officers temporarily assigned to Investigative Services
- Counsels individuals, youths, parents, and guardians on various matters related to cases being investigated
Requirements
- High School graduation or GED equivalent
- Specialized courses/training equivalent to one year of college in Police Science or related field of study preferred
- At least 21 years of age
- Current DCJS certification as a Police Officer, as defined in Virginia Code: 9.1-101.3
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory driver's record based on City of Hampton's criteria
- Pass City physical examination, background investigation (including polygraph examination), and physical agility examination

- Proven ability to positively interact and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to function in stressful situations and exercise good judgment under potentially volatile conditions
- Ability to read and understand laws, policies, rules, and regulations and follow written and oral directions
- Highly motivated, self-supervising, and able to adopt a flexible work schedule

Schedule
