Position Summary
The Forensic Certified Peer Specialist ensures operational procedures and regulations are followed under the authority of the Program Director. They collaborate with consumers, team members, family members, significant others, and collateral resources to promote socialization, creative rehabilitation, and recovery through the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP).
The Forensic Certified Peer Specialist assists team members and other providers in understanding the Recovery Model and daily practice. They are expected to spend 60% of their time in direct contact with consumers or on their behalf. The position requires firsthand experience with mental health services and the forensic system in Allegheny County.
Essential Duties and Functions
- Promote recovery principles with members, providers, and stakeholders.
- Provide recovery coaching, including recovery management, strength identification, goal development, and strategy implementation.
- Aid in reconnecting or identifying natural supports such as peer recovery supports and self-help groups.
- Schedule appointments as needed.
- Navigate the mental health and/or D&A service systems.
- Navigate mental health court, Adult Probation, Justice-related services, and the legal system.
- Participate in treatment team meetings and continuing care meetings as requested.
- Show flexibility in schedule to meet member needs.
- Advocate for member's community needs, medical, and behavioral health needs.
- Maintain certification and utilize motivational interviewing.
- Bridge gaps between physical and behavioral health treatments.
- Provide telephonic support to members and family members regarding recovery tools and resources.
- Empower members to self-advocate and follow through with treatment.
- Travel throughout the region.
- Utilize a laptop to document and bill for services through electronic health record software.
- Work with adults only.
Qualifications
- High School/GED equivalent.
- Experience using mental health services and the forensic system in Allegheny County.
- Board Certified as a Peer Specialist (training to be completed within 6 months of hire if not already certified).
- Valid driver's license and auto insurance.
- Reliable personal vehicle preferred.
- One year of mental health experience preferred.
- Completed and passed Act 73 (FBI), Act 34 (Criminal clearance), and Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance.
- Familiarity with computers and ability to navigate software for documentation and billing.
- To be completed and passed Forensic Certified Peer Specialist training within 6 months of hire if not already certified.
