Certified Peer Counselor - Respite Housing

About the role

We are seeking a compassionate & dedicated Peer Counselor to join our team at Crisis Residence in Patchogue, NY. In this role, you will provide a positive role model of community functioning, informal counseling, peer support and ADL training in a licensed crisis residence providing crisis housing to people with psychiatric diagnoses.

Responsibilities

• Provide a positive role model of community functioning
• Offer informal counseling and peer support
• Train residents in ADLs (Activities of Daily Living)
• Support residents in mastering independent living skills and personal recovery
• Collaborate with staff to ensure safety and well-being of residents

Requirements

• NYS Peer Certification
• Personal or shared experience with mental illness and/or substance abuse issues
• Ability and desire to assist others in mastering independent living skills and the personal recovery process
• Understanding of peer support, self-help philosophy

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience working with individuals with mental illness and/or substance abuse issues
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques
• Passion for supporting individuals in recovery
