About the role

Banner Estrella Medical Center is seeking a Certified Patient Care Assistant for our Med Surg Clinical Care Operations (CCO), the central hub for patient management on campus. CCO provides relief staffing to clinical departments/units, bed assignment, unit staffing, house supervision, and emergency preparedness. As a Patient Care Assistant, you will float throughout the facility (ICU, PCU, MedSurg, PACU, Medical Imaging, ED, and more), delivering care to a diverse patient population. This role offers numerous educational and growth opportunities for highly skilled, flexible CNAs.

A sign-on bonus of $3,000 is available for new Banner Health Certified/Licensed CNA/LNAs. Full-time day shifts (3×12-hour shifts per week, 6:00 AM–6:30 PM) are available, with self-scheduling for shift and weekend coverage. Weekend and holiday rotations are required, with a $1/hour weekend shift differential and an 18% night shift differential when applicable. A 12-month commitment is required for the sign-on bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living, including hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake.
  • Collect patient specimens and data (vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements) in accordance with unit/facility policy.
  • Document objective data and routine aspects of patient care in medical records.
  • Assist in transporting patient specimens and recognize/report abnormalities or changes in patient health status.
  • Promote continuity of care by communicating patient status accurately to other caregivers.
  • Perform procedures and use equipment as delegated by a licensed professional (e.g., blood draws, Foley catheter removal, EKGs, EKG monitoring).
  • Provide supplies, support, and assistance for unit-specific procedures under direct supervision.
  • Perform receptionist/clerical duties to support operational efficiency and communication flow.
  • Participate in resolving customer problems or escalate issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain complete patient records, including admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
  • Ensure charting forms are labeled, accessible, and scanned/filed into patient records.
  • Maintain adequate supplies of office, dietary, and medical materials; complete requisition forms and reconcile orders.
  • Monitor and track electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops) to ensure accountability and functionality.
  • Depending on assignment, assist with transporting patients (e.g., pre/post-operative to critical care) and participate in OR room turnover.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Current BLS certification (must meet AHA curriculum guidelines; in-person skills session required).
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the state of practice (required for new hires and transfers; existing Tucson incumbents may not transfer without meeting this requirement).
  • 1 year of medical clerical experience (preferably in a hospital or physician office) or prior customer service experience.
  • Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy/keyboarding skills.
  • Depending on department assignment, an 85% minimum passing score on ECG or EEG tests (identifying lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity) and completion of an approved electrocardiogram/electroencephalographic interpretation course or on-the-job training.
  • For employees in behavioral health settings serving children (Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS): Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment; Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.
  • For Banner Home Care AZ employees: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required at hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
  • Recent healthcare experience.
  • Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
