Phoenix, Arizona – ICU-Cardiovascular-Hosp – Day Shift
About the role
As a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix, you will join a team delivering exceptional care in a nationally recognized academic facility and Level 1 Trauma center. This 16-bed CVICU specializes in cardiothoracic surgery, including coronary artery bypasses, valve repair/replacement, MAZE, vascular, and thoracic surgeries, as well as medical cardiac patients recovering from acute MI, CHF, and post-cardiac interventions. You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team using advanced treatments such as hemodynamic monitoring, IABP therapy, CRRT, Swan-Ganz catheters, ventricular assist devices (VAD), ECMO, and advanced respiratory therapies (e.g., ventilators, oscillators, nitric oxide, rotoprone therapy).
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, mobility, and nutritional intake.
- Collect patient specimens and data, such as vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements; document objective data and routine care.
- Assist in transporting patient specimens and ensure accurate communication of patient status to caregivers.
- Recognize and report abnormalities or changes in patient health status to licensed professionals.
- Perform delegated procedures (e.g., blood draws, foley catheter removal, EKGs, EKG monitoring) consistent with demonstrated competencies and state scope of practice.
- Support medical staff and patients during unit-specific procedures under direct supervision.
- Perform receptionist/clerical duties to maintain operational efficiency and communication flow.
- Resolve customer problems or escalate issues to appropriate personnel.
- Maintain complete patient records, including admission, transfer, discharge information, progress notes, and consent forms.
- Ensure all reports and chart forms are scanned or filed into patient records and labeled for accessibility.
- Maintain adequate supplies of patient education materials, office, dietary, and medical supplies; complete requisition forms and reconcile orders.
- Monitor and track electronic equipment (e.g., patient ID scanners, laptops) to ensure accountability and functionality.
- Assist with patient transport, including pre-operative and post-operative patients to critical care units, and participate in OR room turnover.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in state of practice (required for new hires and transfers; existing Tucson incumbents may not transfer without meeting this requirement).
- Skills and abilities typically attained with 1 year of medical clerical experience, preferably in a hospital or physician office setting, or prior customer service experience.
- Excellent organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy/keyboarding skills.
- Depending on department assignment, minimum passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG test with accurate identification of lethal cardiac dysrhythmias and epileptiform activity.
- Successful completion of a unit-approved basic electrocardiogram or electroencephalographic interpretation course, or on-the-job training.
- For positions in behavioral health settings serving children: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (required at hire and maintained throughout employment).
- For Banner Home Care AZ: Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (required at hire and maintained throughout employment).
- Must sign an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) licensure in Arizona.
- Recent healthcare experience.
- Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
Schedule
Full-time Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM. Opportunity to utilize self-scheduling for shift and weekend coverage. Includes an 18% night-shift differential and a flat-rate $1/hour weekend shift differential.
