Responsibilities

  • Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, toileting, and dining.
  • Document resident care while respecting and promoting each resident’s rights.
  • Maintain a clean and safe home-like environment.
  • Communicate with staff at the beginning and end of each shift to relay vital information about the shift and any resident concerns.
  • Anticipate residents’ needs to help prevent falls.
  • Adhere to hand hygiene and isolation precautions to prevent transmission of organisms.
  • Bathe residents according to preference and schedule, ensuring privacy and providing tub baths, showers, or bed baths regularly.
  • Provide foot and nail care with every bath.
  • Transfer, lift, and turn residents using proper body mechanics and protocol.
  • Assist residents to change positions according to care plans and report complaints of pain to the assigned nurse.
  • Use gentle handling to prevent skin tears, abrasions, and lacerations; report any occurrences to the nurse immediately.
  • Provide toileting needs according to individual resident needs, accurately record this information daily, and report changes in elimination to the nurse promptly.
  • Encourage and allow residents to walk to and/or from meals, bathroom activities, etc., given current ambulation orders.
  • Give or supervise mouth care to each resident as assigned at least once per shift.
  • Answer resident call bells in a timely manner, responding within 3-6 minutes consistently.
  • Respect residents’ choices regarding clothing, meals, and bedtime.
  • Observe residents for changes and/or problems and report them immediately to the staff nurse.
  • Assist in keeping CNA care plans current and accurate.
  • Maintain resident rooms neat and uncluttered, straightening closets, bedside stands, and dressers.
  • Correct safety issues regarding the resident-care environment or equipment and complete maintenance or housekeeping requests to keep the environment risk-free.
  • Prepare residents and transport them to beauty shop, physical therapy, activities, and scheduled outside appointments as needed.
  • Record and report vital signs and pertinent information, documenting care accurately and reporting abnormal results to the staff nurse promptly.
  • Serve residents trays, feed residents requiring assistance, and encourage residents as needed.
  • Operate patient care equipment such as electric and manual high/low hospital beds, wheelchairs, mechanical lifts, scales, and thermometers.
  • Take direction from the staff nurse and ensure assignments/instructions are understood and carried out.
  • Utilize time effectively to meet job requirements and residents’ needs.
  • Complete items on “to do” sheets and return the list to the staff nurse prior to the end of the scheduled shift.

Requirements

  • Must have completed an 80-hour certification course in Geriatric Nursing or be presently enrolled.
  • Must have passed the Virginia NACEP test after completion of the 80-hour certification course.
  • Must have a current Nursing Assistant license through the Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Must have CPR and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain it.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with confidential information and maintain its integrity.
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and handle medical emergency situations.
  • Strong customer service skills; maintain a hospitality approach to engaging with all individuals.

Pay

$15.00 - $21.88/hour + shift differential
