Certified Nurse Midwife - OB Hospitalist

This is an inpatient-only position providing hospital-based obstetric and midwifery care.

Responsibilities

• Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of patients through interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests.
• Interprets patient data, develops and implements a plan of treatment, and follows through on a continuum of patient care across the health-illness continuum and lifespan within approved protocols.
• Maintains a positive attitude and ensures harmonious relationships through appropriate communication with persons in other departments or outside the practice.
• Communicates information effectively to patients and staff across all age groups: Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.
• Responds to all patient and office staff requests and needs.
• Performs duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in emergencies.
• Supports individual rights and self-determination within boundaries of safety.
• Practices in accordance with the protocols of the practice.
• Provides patients with information on the scope of midwifery services, patient rights, and responsibilities.
• Informs clients about other providers and services when care required is outside the CNM scope of practice.
• Promotes involvement of support persons in the practice setting.
• Delivers safe and satisfying care through knowledge, skills, and judgments.
• Collects and assesses patient care data, develops and implements a plan of management, and evaluates the outcome of care.
• Demonstrates clinical skills and judgments as described in the CNM protocol of the practice.
• Practices in accordance with the standards of care for CNMs.
• Establishes practice guidelines for specialty areas including:
  • Antepartum: Criteria for admission, parameters for assessing pregnancy progress, fetal well-being, risk indicators, and medication parameters.
  • Intrapartum: Parameters for assessing labor progress, maternal and fetal status, medications, management of birth, postpartum period, and newborn adaptation.
  • Postpartum/Newborn: Parameters for assessing postpartum status, newborn well-being, medications, and interventions for deviations from normal.
  • Family Planning/Gynecology: Parameters for assessing physical and emotional status, medications, devices, and interventions for deviations from normal.
• Provides care in a safe environment, demonstrating knowledge of federal and state regulations, infection control, and emergency management.
• Promotes adequate staffing and ensures arrangements for emergency transportation.
• Utilizes appropriate resources for referrals to meet medical, psychosocial, economic, cultural, or family needs.
• Demonstrates a safe mechanism for medical consultation, collaboration, and referral.
• Documents care in legible, complete health records, facilitating communication and patient access to records.
• Provides written documentation of risk assessment, course of management, and outcome of care.
• Ensures prompt entry of laboratory tests, treatments, and consultations in health records.
• Provides copies of health records on referral or transfer and treats records as confidential documents.
• Participates in quality assurance/improvement programs, peer review, and problem resolution.
• Collects and analyzes patient care data for evaluation of care processes and outcomes.
• Maintains a neat and orderly work area and ensures necessary supplies are available.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
• Certifications/Licensure: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina; certification by a nationally recognized credentialing organization as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM).
• Preferred Experience: Two years of experience as a practicing Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM).

Full Time, Rotating
