Qualifications

• Minimum Required: Associate degree in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
• Required: MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), or MLT(ASCP) certification or equivalent.
• Required: Knowledge of specimen requirements, laboratory terminology, assay schedules, and expected turnaround times.
• Required: Ability to read and comprehend written information and perform job duties in a stressful, fast-paced environment.
• Preferred: Laboratory experience and keyboarding skills.

Responsibilities

• Engages in population-appropriate communication and understands growth and development milestones.
• Provides clear instructions to patients/families regarding treatment and involves them in care.
• Identifies physical limitations and behavioral health needs, responding appropriately.
• Interprets population-related data and plans care accordingly.
• Performs treatments, administers medication, and operates equipment safely.
• Recognizes and responds to signs of abuse or neglect.
• Performs waived, moderately complex, and highly complex testing as defined by CLIA.
• Conducts special analyses requiring advanced evaluation and judgment skills.
• Uses protocols and independent judgment to evaluate test result credibility and accuracy.
• Coordinates testing steps for maximum productivity.
• Operates, maintains, and repairs clinical laboratory equipment, including routine preventive maintenance and reagent preparation.
• Recognizes and resolves instrument, equipment, and reagent problems, informing appropriate personnel.
• Maintains currency in the field through mandatory competencies, training, and continuing education.
• Provides instruction for students and new associates.
• Performs and records quality control procedures, evaluating results and implementing corrective actions.
• Analyzes data to detect trends and undertakes specialized corrective actions.
• Obtains blood specimens by venipuncture or skin puncture within scope of training.
• Competently accessions, triages, and processes specimens for testing and transit.
• Evaluates samples for acceptability and follows all safety policies and procedures.
