Certified Athletic Trainer

About the Role

Durham Academy Athletics seeks a life-changing educator to join the sports medicine department and provide athletic healthcare services to student-athletes in grades 7th-12th. In alignment with the school's mission—to prepare each student to live a moral, happy, and productive life—the athletic trainer will keep the experience and development of student-athletes at the center of all goals. This position reports to the Director of Athletics.

Responsibilities

• Practice within the parameters of the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Licensing Law as laid out by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners.
• Follow the Standards of Practice set forth by the Board of Certification and the Code of Ethics set forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association.
• Work collaboratively with staff athletic trainers and under the supervision of an overseeing physician within the six domains of practice:
  • Risk Reduction, Wellness, and Health Literacy
  • Assessment, Evaluation, and Diagnosis
  • Critical Incident Management
  • Therapeutic Intervention
  • Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility
• Afternoon, evening, and occasional weekend hours aligned with athletic schedules.
• Multi-site coverage across several indoor and outdoor venues.
• Embed themselves in everyday school life within a collaborative and team-oriented athletics department.
• Assist the Athletic Director as requested.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This job will require physical and time demands consistent with the field of athletic training.

Requirements

• BOC Certified Athletic Trainer in Good Standing.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training.
• Licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the state of North Carolina.
• CPR/Emergency Cardiac Care certification.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of experience within collegiate athletics or secondary schools.
• Experience working with adolescent athletes in a scholastic setting.
• Familiarity with electronic medical record systems (EMR) and injury documentation.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with key stakeholders, including strength and conditioning staff, physicians, emergency response personnel, and school staff.
• Strong communication, prioritization, and organization skills in a dynamic environment.

About Durham Academy

Durham Academy was founded in 1933 as the Calvert Method School. The founders established the school as a private, independent institution to educate their children and others in Durham. In 1959, the school ended its affiliation with the Calvert School, changed its name to Durham Academy, and began an expansion that led to the first high school graduating class in 1975. The school has since evolved into one of the top independent schools in the state and nation.
