Certified Athletic Trainer
About the Role
Full-time Licensed and Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) to provide High School sports medicine outreach for Ankeny Community School District. The qualified candidate will work to expand event and training room coverage for growing High School and Middle School programs, averaging 40 hours per week. The ATC will provide afternoon and evening High School and/or Middle School event coverage, daily training room, and practice coverage.
Responsibilities
- Point of contact for school-based programs and services within those contracts.
- Build positive referral relationships with coaches, programs, and physician offices through timely communication.
- Administer concussion protocol for school athletes, including identification of signs/symptoms and communication with players, coaches, parents, nurses, and physicians, following return-to-play criteria set by the state athletic association.
- Identify athletic injuries appropriate for physical therapy referral and facilitate the referral process.
- Review physician’s referral (prescription) and patient’s condition/medical records to determine necessary physical therapy treatment.
- Test and measure patient’s strength, motor development, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory/circulatory efficiency; record findings to develop or revise treatment programs.
- Understand Workers’ Compensation system features, rules, and regulations as they relate to patient care, documentation, treatment, and communication.
- Understand Doctors of Physical Therapy’s lines of service, including how to perform, recommend, teach, and progress patients, and document/communicate results.
- Plan and prepare written treatment programs based on patient data evaluation.
- Instruct, motivate, and assist patients in performing physical activities, such as non-manual exercises, ambulatory functional activities, daily-living activities, and work/sports-related functions.
- Administer treatments using physical agents, including hydrotherapy tanks, whirlpool baths, moist packs, ultraviolet/infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines.
- Evaluate treatment effects and adjust treatments for maximum benefit.
- Record treatment, response, and progress in patient charts and electronic medical records.
- Instruct patients and families in treatment procedures to continue at home.
- Complete all required patient documentation, charging, and communication with internal and external team members efficiently.
- Confer with physicians and other practitioners to obtain additional patient information, suggest treatment revisions, and integrate physical therapy with other aspects of healthcare.
- Perform other position-related duties as assigned.
- Follow clinic and OSHA safety rules and procedures.
- Uphold HIPAA regulations.
- Maintain punctuality and dependability for assigned shifts.
Qualifications
- BOC certified.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified (American Red Cross CPR/AED First Aid Instructor preferred).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to be flexible with schedule changes due to injury response.

Schedule
Evening and weekend work may be required to accommodate patient and event schedules. The position averages 40 hours per week.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
The job is physically demanding. Athletic Trainers are required to stand for long periods and spend considerable time stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching. They move heavy equipment and assist with patient transfers, lifts, or help them turn, stand, or walk. To guard against back injury, proper body mechanics and lifting procedures must be followed.
