Responsibilities
- Decontaminate, clean, process, and sterilize supplies and equipment dispensed by the department, following infection control practices and guidelines.
- Follow manufacturer instructions for use for steam and low-temperature sterilization.
- Follow manufacturer instructions for decontamination and disinfection of instruments and flexible endoscopes according to department standards and industry guidelines.
- Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instrument kits, including proper inspection and assembly.
- Adhere to hospital policies for Central Sterile Reprocessing (CSR) and follow AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) guidelines.
- Perform equipment testing (Bowies and Biologicals) and report any abnormal results to the supervisor.
- Deliver sterile instruments and kits within 48 hours to other departments within the hospital.
- Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with regulatory guidelines and hospital policy, including damp dusting horizontal surfaces, end-of-day cleaning, and removal of trash and laundry.
- Attend staff meetings and in-services.
- Stay up to date on departmental communication and required annual and periodic competencies.
- Participate in the orientation of new staff as needed.
- Complete other daily tasks as requested and assigned.
- Perform job-specific requirements and other duties as assigned.
- Answer the phone and take messages when needed.
- Assist representatives with tray handling (incoming or outgoing).
- Support the OR when they are looking for a kit or instrument.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
Qualifications
- Central Sterile certification required within 2 years of hire (to be obtained through CBSPD).
